The University has an illustrious history – its origins can be traced back to 1828 with the Sheffield School of Medicine. The University of Sheffield was officially founded in 1905 when the School of Medicine, Firth College and Sheffield Technical School merged.
Home to more than half a million people, Sheffield is a vibrant city with a reputation for being friendly and welcoming. It’s centrally located in the UK – Manchester can be reached by train in 45 minutes and London in two hours. It’s among the top 10 most affordable UK university cities (2018 NatWest Student Living Index).

Guaranteed accommodation
The University of Sheffield guarantees to find students a place in their accommodation for the duration of their studies, providing they meet a few simple conditions. The university’s accommodation has been voted among the top five in the UK for six years in a row (Times Higher Education Student Experience Survey 2018).
All accommodation includes a private bedroom with a bed, desk and chair. Students will have free Wi-Fi and security 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The majority of rooms are en suite so students will have their own bathroom and WC.
The Residence Life team will help students make the most of their new home. As well as support and guidance, they work in partnership with the Students’ Union to organise regular events, sport activities and social events.

The Diamond
The £81 million centre of engineering, The Diamond, is a multidisciplinary teaching facility with 2,540 study spaces, nine lecture theatres, a jet engine control room, a machine shop, a virtual reality suite and a café serving hot drinks and food.
24-hour library
The library, the Information Commons, is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week and has more than 100,000 books and 500 computers as well as a 70-seat café.
