The Master of Engineering Studies caters for professional engineers seeking advanced technical training and is a taught master's degree with no thesis requirement. The MEngSt comprises a combination of 400 and 600-level courses that enables candidates to study a broad range of topics in their general area of expertise. Fire engineers specialise in the application of science and engineering principles to protect people and their environment from destructive fire. The Master of Engineering in Fire Engineering is open to graduates from relevant branches of engineering, and covers all aspects of fire safety in buildings and other structures, human safety, and risk assessment. Some courses are offered in blocks and online learning software allows for flexible programmes of study. Students also complete a thesis or project. How do I plan my degree? The MEngSt is made up of 120 points: Students doing an endorsement will complete 75 points of courses at 600-level in their relevant endorsement listed within Schedule E Group 1 to the Master of Engineering, and the remaining 45 points of courses are selected from within Schedule E Group 1 or 2 to the Master of Engineering. Students doing their degree unendorsed need to select 75 points of courses at 600-level from any options within Schedule E Group 1 to the Master of Engineering, and the remaining 45 points of courses are selected from within Schedule E Group 1 or 2 to the Master of Engineering. For international students

You will normally need to have completed one of the following: Bachelor of Engineering with Honours with First or Second Class Honours Postgraduate Certificate in Engineering with a GPA of 5 or more Bachelor of Science with Honours in appropriate subjects. You must have completed both the academic and non-academic requirements of your prerequisite degree. This includes practical work days, work reports, a workshop training course, and a first aid certificate. The programme of study must be approved. Applicants must also satisfy our English language entry requirements: IELTS (Academic): An average score of 6.5, with a minimum of 6.0 in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. TOEFL (IBT): Total minimum score of 90, minimum score of 19 in reading, writing, and listening. PTE (Pearson Test of English - Academic): PTE with an overall score of 58 and no PTE communicative skills score below 50. Applications for admission are considered twice each year (June and December) for studies commencing in February of the following year. Numbers are limited each year. Applications received during the year will be considered in the next application round. It is recommended that international students apply by June.

The New Zealand Chapter of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers established the Scholarship in 2007. The purpose is to support a student enrolled in the Master of Engineering in Fire Engineering programme at the University of Canterbury, to undertake fundamental research into fire safety and fire science. This scholarship supports Master's students in Fire Engineering at the University of Canterbury. It was established by Arup, an international design, planning, engineering and management consulting firm with a long history of fire safety engineering as part of its broad multi-disciplinary approach to design of buildings and infrastructure.
