Many choose the general management major because it provides a comprehensive understanding of management that can take them anywhere. Others choose it because of the opportunity to design their own program. Some plan to start their own business. If you're a budding entrepreneur, then a broad-based understanding of business will position you to succeed.
Whether you’re primarily a people person or a numbers person, studying general management will help you further develop and refine what already comes naturally.
Management has traditionally been rooted in planning, organizing and leading, but has become much more than just that. Management means leading others to accomplish common goals. Today’s managers are people oriented, creative, adaptable — strong communicators who deal effectively with rapidly changing environments, work successfully with small and large teams, live and work by principles of ethics and social responsibility, and are aware of our responsibility to the environment.
About the General Management Major
Students majoring in general management study introduction to management, marketing, organizational behavior, operations & quantitative management, introductory accounting, managing responsibly in a global environment, human resources management, information systems & management ,managerial skill development, international management, management policy & strategy, and probability & statistics. Students draw from fields such as history, English, political science, economics and sociology.
Our general management students gain a broad background in all areas of management and have the maximum flexibility to choose courses that fit their personal and career interests. In addition to the required courses, the major includes six 3000 or 4000 level Management electives.
We also offer the flexibility of dual campuses on which to study: Lethbridge and Calgary. Our Calgary campus will meet the needs of working professionals with evening and weekend classes, while the Lethbridge campus is more traditional with an emphasis on daytime classes and a wide range of extra-curricular opportunities to explore. Both locations welcome international and mature students.
Additional Opportunities
Students may also choose to add a minor to their General Management major. A minor will enhance a student's resume and be recognized on their transcript. Several minors complement General Management well, such as not-for-profit/social responsibility, new media, and population health. Learn more about our available minors.
