The offered MSc programs are: a standard MSc in Computing Science, an MSc in Computing Science with specialization in Statistical Machine Learning and an MSc in Computing Science with specialization in Multimedia. The standard MSc in Computing Science is offered as a thesis-based program, as well as course-based program; the MSc in Computing Science with specialization in Statistical Machine Learning is offered as a thesis-based program; the MSc in Computing Science with specialization in Multimedia is offered as a course-based program. Program Requirements Two routes to the MSc degree are available, a thesis-based route and a course-based route. Course-based Route: Students are required to complete ★30 in graduate-level courses, including a ★6 capstone course. Coursework (★24) Courses are to be chosen in consultation with an advisor and approved by the Associate Chair (Graduate). Seven ★3 graduate-level (500 or 600 level) courses CMPUT 603 - Teaching and Research Methods Capstone course (★6) CMPUT 701 - Essay in Computing Science I Thesis-based Route: Students are required to complete ★15 in coursework and a thesis. Coursework (★15) Courses are to be chosen in consultation with an advisor/supervisor and approved by the Associate Chair (Graduate) Four ★3 graduate-level (500 or 600 level) computing science courses. This may include one ★3 Special Topics course (CMPUT 605) CMPUT 603 - Teaching and Research Methods Thesis Registration in 900-level THES. Students must complete and successfully defend a thesis. The thesis topic is to be approved by the supervisor. Seminar Thesis-based Master’s students are required to present a technical seminar based on their research, prior to their final defense. Length of Program Master’s students are expected to complete their program in less than two years. The maximum time to complete the course-based MSc program as set by the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research is six years. The maximum time to complete the thesis-based MSc program as set by the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research is four years.

For international students

Applicants for the MSc degree in Computing Science should have a four-year undergraduate degree or the equivalent from a recognized university, with adequate background in computing science and mathematics. For the MSc (course-based): Applicants for the MSc degree with a specialization in Multimedia should have a four-year undergraduate degree in Computing Science, Computer Engineering, or in a related field in Science or Engineering with some coding and implementation experience. Applicants must have an admission GPA of at least 3.0 on the 4-point scale from the University of Alberta, or an equivalent standing from a recognized institution. English Language Requirement: a minimum TOEFL score of 100 with a minimum score of 20 on each of the individual skill areas (internet-based), or equivalent a minimum of 6.0 on each band on the IELTS with an overall minimum score of 7.0, a minimum overall score of 70 on the CAEL with at least 60 on each subtest a minimum overall score of 68 on the PTE Deadline : January 15
