The MFA is a flexible, practice-based program, offering students opportunities to develop a studio practice in one medium as well as the opportunity to work across multiple mediums. We support students working in practice-based methodologies and working across theory and practice. Past research topics include: Guardians: Urban Totems Cafe Mnemosyne Hidden Crimes Mixed Blessings Punctured Romance This Modern Love Fluid Bodies Pharmakon Click Here To Meet Me Mind Body Phone The Seven Deadly Sins and a Murder of Crows Our Anaerobic Future Science = Magik The Falling Doll Successful applicants to the MFA program typically have a BFA degree with advanced courses in the studio area to which they are applying, a demonstrated interest in continuing their studies at the graduate level and in professional art practice, a well-developed idea of a direction for their thesis exhibition, and an exceptional portfolio that demonstrates an advanced level of work in their area of interest. The minimum period of residence is two years of full-time attendance at the University of Alberta.

For international students

The Department's minimum admission requirements for all master's programs are a general undergraduate degree with a grade point average of 3.0 in the last two years of undergraduate work (or graduate work) at the University of Alberta, or an equivalent qualification from a recognized institution. English language requirement: TOEFL score of 95 (internet-based, with at least 21 per section) or equivalent, or a minimum score of 65 on the Pearson Test of English IELTS: 6.5, with at least 6.0

For Iranian students

For the LLM, the Faculty's minimum admission requirements are an undergraduate JD or LLB degree with an admission GPA of at least 3.0 on the 4-point scale from the University of Alberta, or an equivalent qualification and standing from a recognized institution.

Fine Arts or Rehabilitation Medicine. Awarded on the basis of superior academic achievement. In even-numbered years the scholarship will be awarded for the study in Fine Arts and in odd-numbered years, the scholarship will be awarded for study in Rehabilitation Medicine. In the event that suitable nominees cannot be found in the specified area, the scholarship may be awarded in the other area.
