The Department of Oncology offers programs leading to the degrees of Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy. Applicants with the MSc degree, or a strong undergraduate record, may be accepted directly into the PhD program. Program Requirements: Students are required to complete a minimum of ★6 in coursework beyond the MSc requirements, and a thesis Coursework: Two ★3 courses in areas of advanced specialization or elective, based on research interests and discussions with the supervisor and the Director of the Medical Physics program, chosen from the following: Magnetic Resonance Physics subspecialty ONCOL 690 Magnetic Resonance Physics subspecialty ONCOL 691 Radiological and Nuclear Medical Physics subspecialty ONCOL 692 Radiation Oncology Physics subspecialty ONCOL 693 Elective PHYS 511 Students entering the PhD in Medical Physics directly after an Honors BSc degree must also complete the ★33 in coursework required for the MSc program in Medical Physics. Thesis: Registration in 900-level THES. The student's research is presented in the form of a thesis which must be defended before a final examining committee. PhD Proposal: Students must write a PhD proposal in the form of a research grant proposal that is approved by the supervisory committee usually within 12 -30 months of the start of the graduate program. The PhD proposal must be approved before initiating the candidacy exam process. Candidacy Exam: Medical Physics PhD students must pass an oral candidacy examination consisting of a defence of the research proposal including general medical physics. Students must successfully pass one of the Advanced Specialization Courses before proceeding to the candidacy exam. Ethics Requirement: Students are required to meet the FGSR Academic Integrity and Ethics Training Requirement. See the Oncology Graduate Student Handbook for details on how to fulfill this requirement. Residence Requirement: The minimum period of residence is two academic years of full-time attendance at the University of Alberta. Length of Program: The maximum time to complete the PhD program as set by the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research is six years.

For international students

For the PhD, the Department's minimum admission requirements are a master's degree with an admission GPA of at least 3.3 on the 4-point scale from the University of Alberta, or an equivalent qualification and standing from a recognized institution. The admission GPA will be calculated on the last ?60 of graded coursework completed, or on the equivalent of the last two years of full-time graded coursework. English Language Requirement: a TOEFL score of at least 100 (Internet-based), with a minimum of 21 on each subtest, or equivalent a minimum IELTS score of 7.0, with at least 6.0 in each of the four modules that include listening, academic writing, academic reading and speaking a minimum Pearson score of 68 Fall Admission Deadline: JUNE 1; No Winter Admission.
