Ba In Developmental Studies - Child Development & Child Care / Early Childhood Education

The University of Winnipeg offers the only degree-granting program in Early Childhood Education in Manitoba. Stream C is a professional program in the area of developmental studies specifically designed for those who wish to obtain advanced early childhood education training. This joint program is offered in cooperation with either Red River College or the Université de SaintBoniface. The strength of this program is that it capitalizes on the expertise of each institution, providing a blend of academic and practical experience. You may begin the program at any of the three institutions. As a student in Stream C, you choose one area of specialization - either Inclusion or Child Care Administration. You also take courses from a variety of different departments, as Development Studies is an interdisciplinary program that draws perspectives and methods from many disciplines. This program leads to a 3-year Bachelor of Arts degree in Developmental Studies from The University of Winnipeg and a 2-year Diploma in Early Childhood Education from Red River College or the Université de Saint-Boniface—in only four years. Under the Manitoba Department of Families, graduates of this stream are eligible for the highest level of classification–Early Childhood Educator III. SAMPLE CAREERS Graduates find employment in government and non-government agencies. Positions include childcare centre personnel, supervisors, and program directors, family and community support facilitators, child-life therapists, or specialists in programs designed for children with developmental delays or additional learning needs. SAMPLE COURSES Applied Child Development focuses on the application of theory and research to child development. The course covers research relating to developmental periods before adolescence and discusses implications of these for the practitioner, parent, and professional working both with children who are developing normally and with children who have additional learning needs. Speech and Language Disorders in Children introduces students to the field of communication disorders in children. Topics include the identification of different types of communication disorders, procedures in the evaluation and treatment of these disorders, and practical experience in clinical report writing and record keeping.
