Geography is the study of spatial and temporal variations of the phenomena which make up natural and human-dominated environments. The cultural significance of geography lies in its contribution to an understanding of the total environment. The geographer's skills also find practical application in the conservation and planned development of resources. Increasing numbers of geographers are employed as professionals in these applications. For instance, geomorphologists and biogeographers are undertaking resource inventory surveys and environmental assessment, and human geographers are engaged as urban and regional planners. A Doctor of Philosophy Degree requires three years full-time study and completion of a written thesis. The thesis is reviewed by members of the Australian and international scientific academic community. In the course of their research, PhD students must make a distinct contribution to the knowledge within their specific discipline. Ideally, this will result in the publication of original research findings in peer-reviewed journals of international standing. CAREER OPPORTUNITIES Geographers enjoy careers with the many private and public sector employers, both national and international, that are involved in natural resource or social planning, environmental or urban management, environmental research or social policy research. Having the skills to develop and use information-technology and to analyse and interpret social and environmental data makes professionally-trained geography graduates the key personnel involved in decision making processes associated with government, the business sector and community groups. Consequently, geographers are employed by NGOs to organize international aid; by community and welfare organisations to target limited social and welfare resources to the most needy in our communities; by the business sector to advise on management decisions; by governments to assist with the development of urban and environmental policies and the legal framework required for assessment of human interaction with the environment. Alternatively, graduates may continue to study their chosen specialty as postgraduates which can lead to fulfilling careers in research.

For international students

A candidate for the degree shall have been awarded an appropriate degree of Bachelor with Honours from the University of New South Wales or a qualification considered equivalent from another university or tertiary institution at a level acceptable to the Research Committee of the appropriate Faculty. Candidates may be admitted to the PhD program after one years full-time enrolment in a Masters by Research program, with the approval of the Faculty Postgraduate Affairs Committee. In exceptional cases an applicant who submits evidence of such other academic and professional qualifications as may be approved by the Committee may be permitted to enrol for the degree. English Language Requirements: IELTS: 6.5 overall (min. 6.0 in each subtest); TOEFL IBT (Internet Based): 90 overall (min. 23 in writing, 22 in reading, listening and speaking); Pearson (PTE - Academic): 64 overall (min. 54 in each subtest); C1 Advanced Cambridge: 176 overall (min. 169 in each subtest); C2 Proficiency Cambridge: 180 overall (min. 180 in each subtest); UNSW Global University English Entry Course (UEEC): Successful completion with a minimum overall grade of C+ and a minimum grade of C in the writing component.

Concrete, which is made using industrial waste from steel manufacturing and coal-fired power stations, is being used in a trial in the roads of Sydney for the first time in the world.

UNSW Sydney researchers and the CRCLCL, CRC for Low Carbon Living will use these trial results to create industry guidelines for the very first set of geopolymer concrete.

“While we’ll monitor the road performance for up to five years, a lot of the data collected in the first three to 12 months of this world-first trial will be used to confirm our models and strengthen our predictions. Concrete contributes 7% of all greenhouse gas emissions and in 2018 the world produced about 4.1 billion tonnes of cement, which contributed about 3.5 billion tonnes of CO2. Alternative, low-CO2 concrete materials offer potential benefits in reducing the greenhouse gas emissions associated with conventional concrete. This trial is important because we need demonstration projects to accurately assess the performance of geopolymer over time so that there can be broader uptake,” said Craig Heidrich, executive director of Australian (Iron and Steel) Association and Ash Development Association.

According to the associate professor of sustainability research at UNSW, Dr Tommy Wiedmann, if all concrete produced was geopolymer in place of traditional concrete for one year - 12,000 kilotons of carbon di oxide would be saved.
